Poll places get ready for start of early voting in NY
Irondequoit, N.Y. – Early voting starts across New York this Saturday and runs through November 1.
In Monroe County, 12 polling places will be open for the nine days of early voting starting at 9 a.m.
The Irondequoit Public Library is expected to have one of the bigger turnouts for early voting this year. Staff members say they are expecting thousands to vote there throughout the week. But, the library is asking voters to arrive early and be patient.
The library has turned its conference room into a polling place equipped with hand sanitizer and space for social distancing.
“We have a considerably large meeting room and that certainly played a role in this decision because we can separate polling locations by at least six feet, if not more,” said library director Greg Benoit.
Benoit said he anticipates 8,000 or more voters to turn out over the next week ahead of the November 3 general election date.
“We are asking people to plan in advance and leave themselves an ample amount of time just in case there is a long line. We will have crowd control from the police department in the parking lot if we fill up,” said Benoit.
Election workers will continue using electronic ‘poll pads’ for voters to check in.
The Monroe Country Board of Elections is expecting big early voting crowds at all 12 polling locations. Democratic commissioner Jackie Ortiz says the county has hired enough poll workers for early voting, but still has some spots to fill for the general election.
“We are working right now to make sure we have all of the spots filled in. There are still a couple of holes, but up to date, we have plenty of individuals that we are hoping to plug and play to fill those,” said Ortiz.
Ortiz said election law bans voters at the polls from wearing clothing that supports a specific candidate, but she says attire with phrases such as “Black Lives Matter” or “Make America Great Again” are acceptable.
Ortiz said these count as forms of expression.
The last day to request an absentee ballot online or by mail is Tuesday, October 27.
The last day to request one in person is November 2.
