Busted in East Village murder; NYPD says gunman posed as worker

The gunman wanted for posing as a delivery worker and killing a 30-year-old man in his East Village apartment has been busted, police said Friday,

Jeffrey Faustin, 28, was charged with murder for the Jan. 14 shooting of Davon Venable.

Faustin, police said, was already in federal custody. Records show he pleaded guilty last month in Brooklyn Federal Court to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Surveillance video shows the killer posing as a food delivery worker, sporting dark jacket with yellow reflectors and carrying two bags.

According to police, the suspect knocked on Venable’s fourth-floor apartment door at the Lillian Wald Houses and asked: “Did you order an Uber?”

When Venable answered, the gunman shot him in the back and neck.

Moments after the shooting, the suspect rode off from the scene — an escape captured on surveillance video from outside the building alongside the FDR Drive near E. Houston St.

Video shows killer flee shooting posing as delivery driver, police said.

Venable was rushed by medics to Mount Sinai Beth Israel but could not be saved.

The motive for the shooting is not clear.

Venable worked in construction and with UPS, said his girlfriend, Precious Mitchell.

Mithcell acknowledged Venable was in a gang when he was younger but had moved past that part of his life.

“He was not about these little street beefs,” she said. “Our family has a theory that there was another guy that Devon had an issue with and that guy got somebody to shoot him.”

Faustin, who lives in Bushwick, served almost two years in state prison for a weapons conviction and was paroled in May 2017, according to records. An NYPD officer overheard Faustin identify himself as a member of the 5-9 Brims gang to a rival while riding the subway in July 2020, according to an affidavit filed in federal court.
