NYPD releases footage of SUVs in fatal Brooklyn hit-and-run crash

The NYPD on Tuesday released surveillance footage of two SUVs whose drivers fled after fatally striking a 61-year-old man who had just finished FaceTiming with his fiancée in Brooklyn.

Cops are asking the public’s help identifying and tracking down the drivers.

The driver of a white Toyota RAV4 slammed into Omar Stewart as he stepped into a cab on Washington Ave. near Dean St. in Prospect Heights just before 2:15 a.m. on July 10, cops said.

Stewart was thrown into the path of a black four-door SUV traveling in the opposite direction. That driver also hit Stewart before speeding off without stopping, the video shows. It was not clear if the second driver knew somebody was struck.

The RAV4 sported after-market rims and did not appear to have a license plate, police said. The front bumper and hood were visibly damaged in the crash.

Medics rushed Stewart, suffering a massive head injury, to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Brooklyn Methodist, but he couldn’t be saved.

Stewart’s fiancée, Kecia Edey, told the Daily News last month she spoke to her beloved on FaceTime moments before he was struck. He was on his way home to Bedford-Stuyvesant from a block party and was waiting for the cab outside a car service office, she said.

“Someone could have stopped and he could have been living today,” she said. “He was a good guy. He would help anybody. He wouldn’t have left nobody in the street.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
