Rochester’s Willow Center provides update on domestic violence
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — As part of the efforts to raise awareness about domestic abuse during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the Willow Domestic Violence Center in Rochester is providing a local update on the issue.
It is reported that there were more than 4,800 incidents of domestic violence in the county in the previous year. Willow says that there were over 45,000 calls to 911 that were linked to situations of domestic violence.
The pandemic brought to light the difficulties involved in assisting those who are being abused or who have been abused.
“Sheltering at home with an abuser is really difficult, but when you don’t have a choice, when you can go nowhere else, it adds a whole nother layer of how are we getting help and where can we put wraparound services to make sure people can be safe,” said Rep. Sarah Clark of the 136th Assembly District.
Willow’s 24-hour hotline for domestic violence victims in need is (585) 222-7233. You can also text 585-348-SAFE.
