Uvalde teenager arrested in connection with a shooting threat
Just months after a shooter slaughtered 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary, a teenager in Uvalde, Texas was arrested in connection with a threat of violence at the local high school.
On Monday evening, after the Uvalde Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety were made aware of the possible threat, officials contacted a 16-year-old student. He was arrested on accusations of felony terroristic threat.
The police say that the teen was put in a juvenile jail center after admitting that he had threatened to shoot another student.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District emailed students and staff on Tuesday to confirm the event. School officials say that the threat was sent through an anti-bullying app called STOPit. This app lets kids and parents anonymously report “threats, unacceptable acts, or behaviors.”
“We are thankful that the tools provided to the UCISD families effectively resolved this situation without harming students or staff,” school officials said. “Continuous diligence in this regard will help ensure a safe school environment for all.”
The school administration won’t give out any information, even about the juvenile suspect, who hasn’t been named.
“We appreciate the swift action taken by both entities to address the situation and remove the threat,” the email reads. “Because this is an ongoing investigation involving a juvenile, the District will have no further comment at this time. We will continue to work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies on the case.”
Uvalde, a city located around 80 miles west of San Antonio, is still suffering after the school shooting at Robb Elementary. On May 24, the shooter, Salvador Ramos, entered the school and locked himself in a classroom, where he stayed for about an hour.
Prior to being shot by a responding Border Patrol agent, the 18-year-old murdered 19 pupils and two instructors.
The shooting threat comes a few weeks after the entire UCISD police force was put on leave because of the uproar caused by how officers handled the last incident.
