Transgender woman fatally shot in Honduras after being deported from U.S.

According to reports from the area, a transgender woman who had been deported from the United States in July and who had returned to her home in Honduras was shot and killed this week.

The body of 42-year-old Melissa Nuez was found dead on Tuesday night in the municipality of Morocel, which is situated in eastern Honduras and is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) east of the capital city of Tegucigalpa.

According to Reporter Sin Medo, a local media charity that focuses on problems affecting minorities, she was shot by a group of “hooded people” as she was leaving her house. This information comes from the police.

Nuez, a well-known TikTok user who had more than 20,000 followers at the time, was residing in Honduras at the time. She previously resided in Miami, Florida.

She went back to Honduras in December 2021 after traveling there in December 2021, but she was deported back to Honduras in July 2022 when she returned to Miami. This is what Cattrachas’ general coordinator, Indyra Mendoza, says. Cattrachas is a lesbian feminist group in Tegucigalpa.

According to Cattrachas, the murder of Nuez was the 34th killing of a member of the LGBTQ community in the Central American country of 9.9 million people so far this year. Nuez’s death marked the milestone.

Since 2009, at least 434 members of the LGBTQ community have been shot down in this nation. According to the group, 131 of those individuals identified as having a transgender identity.

Mendoza says that the first clues from the investigation point to the fact that Nuez was killed by two gunshots to the head.

A friend of Nuez’s wrote a post on Facebook in which they referred to her as a “highly brilliant lady” who was “so full of life and energy that nothing was too complex for her.” Nuez herself was also referred to in the post.

“There are no words to describe the sadness of seeing you leave this world so soon,” another friend wrote, calling her “a great woman, a great friend, a tremendous partner in the fight, an excellent human being with a great capacity to love both family and neighbor.”
