Security guard and shoplifter killed after engaging in a gunfight in a Maryland grocery store

On Friday, a suspected shoplifter and a security officer at a grocery store in Maryland fired shots, resulting in both of their deaths. The incident began when the guard confronted the shoplifter about her attempt to steal.

According to statements made during a press conference by Prince George’s County Police Major Zachary O’Lare, a female suspect was reportedly trying to steal from a Giant grocery store in Oxon Hill, Maryland, at around 10:25 a.m. on Friday. The suspect was approached by a male security guard.

According to O’Lare, she reached into her bag and took out a handgun before opening fire on the security guard several times, prompting the guard to return fire.

The security guard was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, while the woman was transported to the hospital, where she eventually passed away. There were no additional people who were hurt in the incident.

The identities of the persons involved in the gunfight were not made public.

According to the testimonies of witnesses, the security guard asked the alleged shoplifter several times to return the items she had stolen prior to the incident. After the incident, the store remained closed for the rest of the day.
