Two guns recovered inside city schools, one of them found in a 6-year-old’s backpack
Police say they recovered two firearms from city schools on Thursday, including one that was loaded and had been brought in by a 6-year-old Bronx boy.
After the young student discovered the gun in his bag at 8:30 in the morning, he alerted a teacher at Boys Prep Bronx, a charter school located on E. 151st Street in the South Bronx.
The boy said that he had no clue how the firearm ended up in his backpack.
The police were investigating the possibility that a member of the child’s household concealed the weapon in the boy’s bag and interviewed the child’s family.
School officials say that when staff members found the gun, they called the police right away.
At around the same time on Thursday morning, police officers in Brooklyn arrested a 14-year-old boy at Brooklyn Collegiate High School after discovering a 9 mm handgun in his bag.
According to the police, a few days earlier, the teenager was captured on a security camera in the area showing the firearm to his friends.
On Thursday morning, he was removed from class and taken to a separate room by school officials. According to the police, the weapon was still in his bag.
A source from the city’s School Safety Division says that there are no scanners at any of the entrances to Brooklyn Collegiate.
Weapon possession charges were brought against the teenager.
