Vehicle explosion on bridge between NY, Canada closes the border
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Following an explosion at a checkpoint on the Rainbow Bridge near Niagara Falls, several U.S.-Canada border crossings have been shut down.
The Buffalo division of the FBI released a statement, confirming they are probing the blast on the Rainbow Bridge, a key link between the two nations over the Niagara River.
Captured images and videos by media and shared online depict a damaged security booth, scorched by the blast.
Additional details were not immediately disclosed.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been updated on the event and is “closely monitoring the situation.” According to WIVB, Hochul, originating from Buffalo, is en route to Western New York.
The Rainbow Bridge is one among four border crossings uniting Ontario with western New York. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission has announced the closure of all four — The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, and Rainbow Bridge — in both directions.
