President Biden’s lead over former President Trump has diminished, new poll shows

In a recent YouGov/Yahoo News poll, the race between President Biden and former President Trump for the 2024 election has tightened, with both candidates now equally favored among registered voters.

The poll shows that Biden and Trump are each supported by 44 percent of registered voters. Another 7 percent remain undecided, and 4 percent have decided not to vote. This data indicates a decrease in Biden’s popularity while Trump’s support has seen a gradual increase, occurring amidst four criminal indictments against him.

Previously, a YouGov/Yahoo News poll last month had Biden slightly ahead, with 47 percent support compared to Trump’s 41 percent. Current challenges for Biden include concerns about his age and a forthcoming impeachment inquiry by House Republicans, complicating his path to the 2024 election.

The poll also reveals that 77 percent of Americans consider Biden’s age a concern, compared to 64 percent for Trump. Additionally, only 27 percent believe Biden is fit for another term. Regarding perceptions of family corruption, 41 percent view Trump’s family as more corrupt, while 38 percent see Biden’s family in the same light. This is a shift from August, when 46 percent believed Trump’s family was more corrupt compared to 36 percent for Biden.

Biden’s overall approval rating stands at 38 percent, slightly higher than his lowest of 35 percent in August 2022. Despite economic improvements, only 34 percent approve of his economic management.

This survey was conducted online with 1,636 U.S. adults from Sept. 14-18 by YouGov and has a margin of error of 2.7 percent.
