City of Rochester invites residents to join poster contest honoring 250th anniversary of US independence

Rochester, New York – The Rochester is inviting residents to take part in a creative effort to mark an important moment in American history. City leaders announced participation in the America 250 City Art Poster Project, a nationwide initiative organized by the U.S. Conference of Mayors in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The project celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and encourages communities to reflect on their past while imagining the future.
“As we celebrate 250 years of American history, this poster contest is an opportunity to honor our shared values, tell our local stories, and imagine the next chapter of our democracy,” said Malik D. Evans. “Whether you are a professional artist or a resident moved by the subject matter, I encourage you to participate.”
Celebrating history through community art
Residents are encouraged to submit original poster designs that reflect civic pride, local history, and optimism for the next 250 years. Organizers say the project aims to highlight Rochester’s unique identity while connecting it to the broader national milestone.
The top 25 submissions will be displayed on the City’s website. One poster will be selected to represent Rochester at the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 94th Annual Meeting, scheduled for June 4–7, 2026, in Long Beach.
Participation is open to residents of all ages and backgrounds who live within the City of Rochester’s municipal boundaries. Residency is defined by city limits rather than ZIP codes. Individuals can confirm eligibility by entering their address into the City’s Property Information tool.
Artists may work independently or collaborate with schools, libraries, recreation centers, community organizations, or nonprofit partners. Posters must be nonpartisan and cannot include political messaging or inflammatory language. Participants are encouraged to highlight Rochester’s history, culture, and community spirit.
Submission details and deadline
Artwork submissions must include the completed application form and be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Additional information about submission guidelines and project details is available through the city’s website.
City officials say the poster project offers an opportunity for residents to reflect on shared history, express civic pride, and contribute creative ideas about the nation’s future. By encouraging wide participation, Rochester hopes to showcase the artistic voices and cultural identity that define the community while celebrating a milestone that belongs to the entire country.
