Democrats keep control of U.S. Senate with crucial Nevada victory

The Republicans are now in the lead by a razor-thin margin, but there are still several seats to be decided. The most likely scenario is that Republicans will secure a small majority in the House of Representatives, although Democrats have a narrow path that could see the party hold on to control in the chamber.

On Saturday night, the authorities in the state of Nevada released a new batch of results from the midterm election. These results showed that the Democrat senator Catherine Cortez-Masto had moved into the lead in her contest with the challenger Adam Lexalt, who had previously served as the attorney general of the state.

Even though there are still thousands of votes to be counted in Nevada, several news outlets in the United States, including the Associated Press, NBC, CBS, and CNN, have projected that Ms. Cortez-Masto would maintain her seat.

The result of her win ensured that the Democrats would have at least 50 seats in the chamber, which has a total of 100 members.

By winning 50 seats in the Senate before the new Congress convenes in January, the Democrats will have a majority because US Vice President Kamala Harris has a casting vote in the event of a tie.

Before the midterm elections that took place last week, it was believed that Ms. Cortez-Masto was the most vulnerable of the Democratic senators who were running for re-election.
