Former U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi on Tuesday launched a campaign to retake the New York congressional seat held by Rep. George Santos

On Tuesday, former U.S. Representative Tom Suozzi announced his intention to reclaim the congressional seat in New York currently occupied by Representative George Santos. Santos, a Republican, is facing numerous criminal allegations.

Suozzi, who previously served the 3rd Congressional District encompassing parts of Long Island and northeast Queens, had an unsuccessful gubernatorial run last year.

In a statement released on X, also known as Twitter, the Democrat revealed his plans to run for Congress, with a formal campaign launch scheduled after next month’s local elections.

“Today I’m filing a committee to run for Congress in November 2024,” Suozzi stated. “The madness in Washington, D.C., and the absurdity of George Santos remaining in the United States Congress is obvious to everyone.”

Several candidates are preparing to contest for this seat, which is considered pivotal in the upcoming competitive congressional races in New York. These races are crucial for determining which party controls the House. Democrats in New York view Santos’ seat as vital, especially after surprising losses in the previous year’s congressional elections.

Santos has been under scrutiny since a May federal indictment accused him of donor deception, campaign fund embezzlement, submitting false financial disclosures to Congress, and illegitimately receiving unemployment benefits. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges.

A new indictment was recently issued against Santos, charging him with identity theft of his political donors and unauthorized credit card charges amounting to thousands of dollars.

Santos, who has not responded to requests for comments made on Tuesday, has previously refuted any fraudulent activities.

Recently, Santos’ former treasurer admitted guilt in a fraud conspiracy, implicating Santos in falsifying campaign finance reports.

Post-election, it was revealed that Santos had fabricated many aspects of his background, including his education, employment history, and heritage. Despite admitting to resume embellishment, Santos believes the reactions are exaggerated.

Suozzi, who has a background in accounting and law, was first elected to Congress in 2016 and narrowly won reelection in 2020. His political career also includes terms as Glen Cove’s mayor (1994-2001) and as Nassau County’s elected executive (2002-2009).
