Local authorities caught five people while trying to steal vehicles from Henrietta business, one suspect fled the scene

Rochester, New York – On Thursday night, the majority of the Monroe County residents were preparing for the winter storm expected to hit the area on Friday, just before the Christmas weekend. While almost everyone was focused on the winter storm preparations, several people attempted to rob a local dealership Friday after midnight but were caught on the scene and arrested by the local authorities.

According to the incident provided by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the suspects were caught after 12:45 a.m. on Friday as they were about to steal vehicles from the CarMax in Henrietta, located at 3600 W. Henrietta Rd. Deputies responded to the scene after someone reported a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the closed business.

When responding deputies arrived at the scene, they noticed several suspects driving four vehicles into the property. Deputies believe the suspects jumped the fence and got access to the vehicles prior to deputies’ arrival. Once the suspects noticed the deputies, they tried to flee the scene.

Officials with the sheriff’s office said that a total of six people were spotted in the CarMax secure lot. Several other crews arrived and set a perimeter to capture the suspects. While trying to flee the scene, one of the suspects drove a vehicle into the gate of the lot, while all the others tried to flee the scene on foot. Responding deputies managed to capture five of the suspects, but one of them managed to flee the scene despite K9 units’ efforts to track them.

The suspects are facing several charges, including Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, Attempted Grand Larceny in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree. One of the suspects was identified as 22-year-old Abdiweli A. Derrow of Rochester, while the identities of the remaining suspects were not released to the public because they are juveniles. The suspect who fled to scene is also believed to be a juvenile.

According to deputies, Derow was arraigned in Henrietta Town Court and released on his own recognizance. The juveniles were issued juvenile appearance tickets and released.
