One man shot, another killed in a Lower Manhattan building lobby
Police said that one man was murdered and another was injured in a shooting at a Lower Manhattan public housing complex on Thursday.
The men, aged 21 and 24, were taking the elevator down to the lobby of the Pedro Albizu Campos Plaza NYCHA building on E. 12th St. near Avenue C in the East Village at around 7:40 p.m., according to police and a witness.
“The guy in the lobby started shooting the guys in the elevator,” said Kevin Doja, who was delivering pharmaceuticals in the building. “There were three, maybe four shots.”
The 21-year-old was fatally shot in the chest, while the 24-year-old was wounded in the left leg, according to authorities.
According to reports, the elderly man took the elevator back up to his fifth-floor apartment.
“The other one on the floor was almost dead,” said Doja. “I just started running.”
“It was crazy scary,” he added. “I didn’t want him to shoot me.”
The gunman, who police described as a Black male wearing a gray sweatshirt and a blue cap, fled the scene.
Both victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital, where the younger of the two was pronounced dead. According to authorities, the 24-year-old was expected to recover from his injuries.
Police continue to seek the shooter. No arrests were made immediately.
