SUV driver in DUI crash that struck a pedestrian may now face upgraded charges after victim dies over a week later
The police said on Tuesday that a 48-year-old man who was hit by a drunk motorist in Brooklyn has passed away after fighting for his life for over a week.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. on October 19, Jamel Finny was crossing Fulton Street in the middle of the block at Franklin Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant when he was hit by a westbound 2021 Ford Escape driver, according to the police.
He was taken to the New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital by emergency medical personnel, where he passed away 10 days later.
According to the police, Finny’s home was in Crown Heights, which was around a dozen streets away from the location where he was struck.
Tanaisa Canhigh, the driver of the SUV, stayed at the scene after the crash and was taken into custody. Tanaisa Canhigh also resides in Crown Heights. The next day, she was charged with vehicular assault and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Following her arraignment in the Brooklyn Criminal Court, she was not required to post bail and was therefore released. According to the officials in the court, none of the charges were eligible for bail.
Canhigh, age 29, may be subject to more serious charges as a result of Finny’s death.
