Greece Central School District helping families in need

Greece, New York – Christmas is a time for celebration, gift-giving, spending time with friends and family, and creating lasting memories. Decorating the Christmas tree and the festive atmosphere everywhere you go makes Christmas the nicest period of the year.

Although Christmas is a time for joy, many people are unable to celebrate the holidays due to financial struggles caused by the pandemic and recently fueled by the highest inflation in decades and skyrocketing prices on almost everything. That’s why dozens of donation and giveaway events have been organized recently in Rochester, and the Greece Central School District is the latest to chime in and help those in need.

In a partnership with Foodlink and the Lakeshore Community Church, the Greece CSD will provide meal kits for 300 families in need, according to a statement by the district. A total of 300 meal kits will be assembled at Lakeshore Community Church by volunteers. Half of them will be given to community members, who will have to come at the church and pick up the meal kits, while 150 kits will be taken by the Greece CSD and given to schools within the district.

Although it’s not enough, hundreds of families in need will be given the opportunity to feel some of the Christmas magic. The event is a part of the Community Schools strategy — a strategy to provide support for families in need.

“There has been a steady uptick in families saying they need help,” said Kelly Sperduto, the coordinator of the Greece Central School District Community Schools. “Grocery budgets just don`t go as far as they used to,” Sperduto added.

Greece Central School District is hosting this year’s event for the third time, and the school district’s officials are confident that similar events will be held every year before the holidays.

Last week, the Salvation Army of Greater Rochester held a giveaway event where more than 10,000 Rochester residents in need, adults and children, were given free food, toys, and other items to help them ahead of Christmas. This event was one of the largest of its kind in the area this holiday season.
