New energy affordability option aims to ease the burden on struggling New York residents

Rochester, New York – New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are urging customers to take advantage of a newly expanded program designed to help reduce energy costs for moderate-income households. The Enhanced Energy Affordability Program (EEAP) provides monthly bill discounts to eligible customers who may not qualify for other existing aid programs.
“Cold weather is here to stay and EEAP is another option to help reduce the impact of a customer’s bill,” said Christine Alexander, vice president of customer service for NYSEG and RG&E. “Innovative ideas like this help customers in the communities we serve. At the same time, we continue to encourage everyone to research options that are best for them to control their bills.”
Energy Prices Continue to Rise Across New York
According to NYSEG, the cost of electricity and natural gas—also known as supply charges—has more than doubled since 2020. These charges are pass-through in nature, meaning the utility companies purchase the energy on the open market and deliver it to customers without any markup. As such, prices vary depending on market conditions and the specific supply plan selected by the customer. In contrast, New York’s statewide inflation rate since 2020 has remained closer to 21%, highlighting the strain that energy prices are placing on households.
The EEAP is aimed at customers whose income is below the state’s median level but who do not meet eligibility requirements for the existing Energy Affordability Program (EAP). By expanding access to discounts, the companies hope to bring relief to more New Yorkers during the winter season and beyond.
How to Apply
Customers interested in applying for the Enhanced Energy Affordability Program or seeking additional information can visit NYSEG’s website to learn about eligibility and how to enroll. RG&E customers may also find resources through their respective customer portals.
As energy costs remain a concern for many households, programs like EEAP are becoming increasingly important in helping New Yorkers manage their bills while staying warm and safe.
